Hot Tub and Pool Water Care Basics

Your spa or hot tub will provide you a lifetime of enjoyment if you maintain the Water Balance and safety. You will shorten the life of your spa's parts if you do not take care of or use too many chemicals in the water. It's easy to follow Carefree's Spa Care Guide for crystal clear water. The spa should always be clear to the bottom and should not have any funky odors. CIRCULATE: Hot Tub or pool water should be set to the highest level of circulation The more the water moves in the vessel the harder it is for bacteria or algae to grow. It is important to filter out debris and swimmer's waste (dead skin cells, cake make up, self-tanners, insects, etc.).

FILTER: The filter is one of the most important tools in your spa or swimming pool. It removes debris and most microscopic particles. A filter should be backwashed (pool) or rinsed (spa or pool) frequently.

CLEAN: For a pool, the walls and floor should be brushed or vacuumed at least once per week during the season. A spa at least quarterly. If you can not do this then retain an automatic pool cleaner or retain a weekly (pool) or bi-monthly (spa) service from Carefree. See spa and pool cleaning services.

SANITIZE: Some sanitizers such as chlorine or bromine kill bacteria. Mineral ionization and salts inhibits the growth of bacteria. Use sanitizer in your spa or pool to prevent bacteria from taking over.

OXIDIZE: Sanitizers do not handle swimmer's waste such as body lotions, make-up, dead skin cells or insects. Add an oxidizer once per week such as shock which is an agent to oxidize swimmer's waste.

BALANCE: With the exception of AquaFinesse, most spa or pool water care systems require weekly water tests or more frequent with larger bather loads to determine the pH levels, the presence of sanitizers and calcium hardness of the water in the vessel. Testing helps identify water balance issues before they become skin diseases or skin irritation issues.

Water Balance Ideas

After your hot tub installation, you will need to know how to fill and drain and refill your spa. We also train you how to achieve excellent water balance and health.

Whether we have an outdoor or indoor spa or hot tub, we need to pay close attention to our water and filter cartridge. As part of our royal treatment, Carefree provides each new spa customer with an in-store Water Care and Filter Cleaning Class.
